SMILES Center for Independent Living is a nonprofit organization founded in 1988 by consumers and community advocates to serve people with any type of disability and people of all ages in Southern Minnesota’s Region Nine with offices in Fairmont, Mankato and New Ulm. Our vision is a world without barriers with equal opportunities and choices for an independent life. SMILES provides advocacy, both individual and systems to problem solve to reduce or eliminate the barriers that persons with disabilities may encounter, Independent Living Skills Training serving youth and adults, individually or in groups with an opportunity to make appropriate choices and learn skills that will assist them to achieve the highest level of independence possible. Peer Mentoring assisting persons with disabilities to achieve the independence they desire by sharing experiences, providing educational resources and giving support. Transition from School to Community provides a bridge from the security of school to the responsibilities and opportunities of adult life. This program is available for individuals with disabilities 14 to 24-years-old, no longer attending high school and persons with disabilities to relocate from a nursing home to an independent living situation. SMILES provides information and referral resources to all community members.
